Weathering & Accumulation

A solo exhibition by Shogo Hirata. Opening: April 25th at 17-20:00

Shogo Hirata

In the exhibition 'Weathering and Accumulation', Shogo Hirata reflects on how time leaves its mark - through fading, layering and the silent transformation of natural materials. Hirata explores pigments that come from nature - vegetables, soil and plants - and captures colors shaped by time and place. In this exhibition, he shows textile and paper (cellulose fiber) artworks dyed with pigments extracted from vegetable scraps, along with soil pigments collected from Falun, Okayama (Japan), and the farm at his home in Gävleborg. Some of these works are related to his ongoing exploration of traditional Swedish red color through the research project "Shiki - folk pigments".

About the artist:

Shogo Hirata (b. 1986, Kyoto, Japan) is a textile artist based in Gävleborg, Sweden, who specializes in cellulose fibers and explores the intersections of tradition, innovation and cultural exchange.

Drawing inspiration from traditional textile crafts and analog techniques such as photograms, Shogo's work is based on a deep engagement with materiality and process. His work combines experimentation with meticulous craftsmanship, weaving together diverse techniques, materials, and cultural influences into cohesive, thought-provoking creations. Using paper, textiles and natural dyeing, Shogo creates encounters where aesthetics and functionality coexist, making connections between history, contemporary practice and society. His work has been shown in many exhibitions in Sweden and Japan, reflecting his role as an artistic bridge builder between the two cultures. In recent years, he has expanded his practice to include scenographic work for dance installations, further exploring the dynamic relationships between the art forms.

We look forward to welcoming you to Gallery Résistance.
